Things will be awkward ~ This is normal. It will take a day or two to figure out your way around the house, and the family's routines. The language barrier will also make thins a bit awkward during meals and family time. Roll with it!
When it's time to sleep, SLEEP! Don't be tempted to get on social networks and talk to your friends and family in the US. With the time difference, it will be tempting, but it is very important that you stay healthy by getting a good night’s rest. You will have a chance to show your family and friends all of your photos and tell them your stories when you return!
Stay positive and focused on the wonderful opportunity you have to experience so many new places and meet new friends.
Common Sense
Limit the use of electronic devices so that you can enjoy the family and your surroundings. Don't stay in your room, get involved with dinner preparations, ask to help with whatever the family is doing, go along with their suggestions, even if it is a simple trip to the market!
Avoid comparing your home/family with those of your friends on the trip. Each home is unique. Some of you will be in country side homes, while others may be in apartments. Enjoy your own unique cultural experience!
Ask questions! Ask for clarification if you are not sure if you understood something properly. Ask your host to write it down if it helps.
Communicate! Even if it is in limited French, or through signs or pictures. Ask about having a snack, ask for a towel, ask for water, ask how to turn on the shower, ask about the cat, ask about the signs on the road, ask about the weather, ask about the food, ask about the music...Ask ask ask. Don't be afraid to show curiosity, because curiosity shows you are INTERESTED!!!
